At a time when the number of europeans foreign fighers in Syria and Iraq reaches an alarming level, and when the terrorist attacks of islamist matrix are increasingly repeated in the old continent, perpetrated by endogenous cells or individuals acting independently (lone wolves), it matters to reflect on the process which underlies these phenomena: the radicalization. Contrary to what happened previous decades, when the majority of radical islamists acting in Europe were immigrants of muslim contries, today it is found that a growing number relates to young european muslims who, although having connections to Islam (being sons or grandsons of immigrants from Muslim countries), were born and raised in the West. Thereby, we ask ourselves about the factors that lead these indivuals to adopt radical visions of Islam, often turning against their own country and representing a threat to its homeland security, also making an attempt to understand how this proccess can be prevented.
